Getting the Whole Family More Active

Getting the Whole Family More Active

It's no secret that leading a sedentary lifestyle can have some pretty serious consequences for your health. That's why it's so important to make sure that you and your family are regularly active.

But how do you get everyone on board?

Here are a few tips to get the whole family more active and develop healthy habits for a long and healthy life together.

Set a good example.

If you want your children to be active, you need to lead by example. Make sure that you’re getting enough exercise yourself and find ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Taking a brisk walk together after dinner is a great way to get everyone moving while spending quality time together as a family, as well as digesting for a good night’s sleep.

Find activities that everyone enjoys.

Not everyone loves going for a run or hitting the gym, but there are plenty of other ways to get active. Brainstorm as a family to come up with ideas for activities that everyone will enjoy and make sure to rotate them often so things don’t get too monotonous. From hiking and biking to playing tag in the park, there are endless possibilities!

Schedule it in.

Just like any other important event or obligation, physical activity can be scheduled into your day so that it’s less likely to be forgotten. Set aside time each day for the whole family to be active and stick to it as much as possible. You may even want to consider signing up for a class or joining a sports team together to help stay motivated. If you’re really busy as parents, you could even pair up with another household and take turns.

Make it fun!

The most important thing is to make sure that everyone is having fun while being active. If it feels like a chore, it’s less likely that anyone will want to do it. So crank up the music, get creative and have some fun with it!

Make healthy eating a family activity. What you eat is just as important as how active you are if you want to live a healthy, happy life. Try to sit down together for at least one meal a day and use it as an opportunity to talk about the food you’re eating and plan the activities you’re going to do that day or week.

Making physical activity a priority in your family’s life is one of the best things you can do for your and their health both now and in the future. By following these tips, you can help everyone develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
