Overcome your anxiety about joining a club or group

Joining a club or group can be a great way to meet new people and get active.

A few tips to help you overcome that anxiety:

Being part of a group has many benefits and studies have shown you’re more likely to continue something as part of a group than when doing it alone. Talk to someone who’s already a member. Find out what they like about the club or group, and what made them decide to join. This can help you get a better sense of what to expect.

  • Think about why you want to join. What are your goals? Do you want to make new friends, get fit, or learn new skills? Keep these things in mind when you’re feeling anxious about joining, as they can help you stay motivated.
  • Talk to the group leader or organiser. They can answer any questions you have and make sure you feel comfortable joining.
  • Take it one step at a time. If the thought of joining a club or group is overwhelming, start by attending just one meeting or event. This can help you ease into things and see if it’s really for you.
